Weddings: Bring Your Own Food

Weddings: Bring Your Own Food

After 30 years as a wedding photographer the best piece of advice that I can give is to bring your own food to weddings. I can’t tell you how many times I waited for a meal (in the basement) only to have 3 minutes to scarf it down before cake cutting. Or didn’t get a meal at all or got a sandwich in a paper bag or worst of all had to bare the indignity of begging for a meal and still not getting one. The caterer is concerned with the client and their guest’s period. It’s every vendor for themselves. Although the band always seems to get fed, even if they just arrived an hour ago.... why is that?

Yes, our contract stated that we were to get vendor meals, and the couple always thought that we would get a meal, but it was a crap shoot as to whether we got fed. When they asked how my dinner was, I would always say it was great. A wedding is not the place to worry about your needs, it’s not about you, so take care of yourself! Once I started bringing my own food it was a total game changer! I had snacks throughout the day, so I never got ravenous and when the couple sat down so did we. This meant we could go off and have a few minutes to relax and regroup and even digest, a much more dignified experience!

When you have your own food, you can focus on why you are there and not be distracted by being hungry and cranky. At some venues we are not permitted to go to the bar, even for water so we also pack beverages, gotta stay hydrated!  Don’t forget the ibuprofen!!!
